No Universal Answer—Start With Your Scenario
I coordinate rush orders for a small AV and network integration company. I've handled 200+ rush jobs in 8 years, including same-day turnarounds for property managers and restaurant owners. When something breaks before a deadline, the first question isn't 'What's the best product?' It's 'What kind of emergency is this?'
Because the wrong fix can cost more than the original problem. The $500 quote turned into $800 after shipping, setup, and revision fees. The $650 all-inclusive quote was actually cheaper. That's total cost of ownership (TCO)—i.e., not just the unit price but all associated costs.
Here are four scenarios I see most often. Find the one that sounds like your week.

- Scenario B: Your robot vacuum or mop died before a client visit.
- Scenario C: Your Android phone won't connect to a smart lock.
- Scenario D: Your duct range hood stopped venting before service.
Scenario A: One Wi-Fi Dead Zone, Four Hours to Fix It
If you've ever had a dead zone during a client call, you know the panic. In March 2024, 36 hours before a client's office move, their main router died. We had a spare TP-Link RE500X in the van. Normal turnaround for a network vendor was 3-5 days. We set it up in about 12 minutes and saved the move.

The 'extenders are always bad' thinking comes from an era of cheap single-band repeaters. Today, a decent Wi-Fi 6 extender can be fine for one dead zone. Place it halfway between the router and the dead zone—not in the dead zone itself. That's a common mistake.
TCO check: A $60-70 extender (street price, January 2025) is cheaper than a $200 mesh system if you only have one problem area. But if you have three dead zones, mesh is the better TCO. The cheap extender becomes the expensive mistake.
So glad I kept a spare RE500X in the van. Almost sold it to another client, which would have meant driving 90 minutes to a big-box store.
Scenario B: Robot Vacuum or Mop Died Before an Event
This is a weird one, but it happens. A property manager calls because the robot vacuum stopped in the middle of a lobby before a tenant tour. Or a home office operator needs the floor clean before a video shoot.

If your current robot is a Shark and it won't connect, try a factory reset before you buy anything. Then reconnect through the app. I'm not 100% sure every model is identical, so check your manual. But this works for many Shark IQ and older models.
Risk weighing: The upside was saving $300 by repairing the old vacuum. The risk was it dying again during the tenant tour. I kept asking myself: is $300 worth potentially looking unprepared in front of a client? For a business, the answer was no.
Scenario C: Smart Lock Android Compatibility Fails
Smart locks are supposed to make access easier. Then Android updates roll out, and suddenly your phone can't unlock the door. If you've ever been locked out of your own office, you know that special kind of frustration (ugh).
First, don't assume the lock is dead. Check these in order:
- Bluetooth is on and the lock is within range.
- The lock's app has location and nearby-device permissions.
- Your phone is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band, not 5GHz, if the lock uses Wi-Fi setup.
- The lock's firmware is up to date.
- Matter compatibility—if the lock supports Matter, you may be able to use it with Google Home or Samsung SmartThings instead of the vendor app.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: many smart locks have much better iOS support than Android support. That's changing with Matter, but it's still true for older models. If you're running a small business on Android, check the Android app reviews before you buy. A lock that saves $40 but fails every third Android update has a terrible TCO.
TCO check: Add up the cost of the lock, installation, a backup keypad, staff training, and the time you spend troubleshooting. A $180 lock with good Android support can be cheaper than a $120 lock that eats 4 hours of your quarter.
Scenario D: Duct Range Hood Stopped Venting
This is a safety scenario, not a convenience scenario. If your duct range hood stops pulling smoke or grease before a dinner service, don't just buy a new hood. The problem is often the duct, not the unit.
Check the easy stuff first: is the breaker tripped? Is the filter so clogged that air can't move? Is the duct damper stuck? For commercial kitchens, NFPA 96 sets requirements for exhaust system cleaning and maintenance. For home kitchens, the same logic applies: grease buildup in the duct is a fire risk.
I've seen a client try to save $400 by replacing a hood without cleaning the duct. The new hood pulled even less air because the duct was restricted. They paid the $400, then paid $1,200 for emergency duct cleaning and a re-inspection. That's the classic TCO trap.
If the hood is venting but weak, check make-up air. A tight building can't exhaust air if no air can get in. Cracking a window is a temporary test, not a permanent fix. If you smell smoke or see grease dripping, stop cooking and call a certified technician. That's not a DIY emergency.
Dodged a bullet when I double-checked the duct damper before approving a hood replacement. Was one click away from ordering a $900 unit that wouldn't have fixed anything.
How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
Ask two questions:
- What is the risk if it stays broken? Safety (duct hood) > security (smart lock) > revenue (Wi-Fi) > convenience (robot vacuum).
- How fast does it need to work? Under 4 hours: use a temporary workaround or a known off-the-shelf part. Under 24 hours: same-day local pickup plus DIY. Under 1 week: slow down and calculate TCO properly.
If multiple things fail at once, triage by risk, not by price. The cheapest fix on the list is rarely the one that saves the most money.
Personally, I keep a small emergency kit: a spare Wi-Fi extender, a factory-reset cheat sheet, a Matter-compatible smart lock backup keypad, and a certified HVAC contact for duct hoods. That kit has saved more deadlines than any single product.
Take it from someone who has paid rush fees to fix a $50 problem: the goal isn't to buy the cheapest thing. It's to buy the thing that gets you back to work with the least total cost.
