After 14 router installations, I usually tell people to buy the TP-Link Deco S7 and skip the TP-Link Archer BE805. The only exception is if you already have 2 Gbps internet and a real Wi-Fi 7 device to connect today. Not someday. Today.
That sounds blunt, but I've handled network orders for a mixed-use building for six years. I've personally made—and documented—five significant buying mistakes, totaling about $1,800 in wasted budget. Now I maintain a checklist so our team doesn't repeat them. This article is that checklist with the review parts left in.
Why I have an opinion
Six years ago I bought a 'whole home' router because the box showed a big circle covering everything. I had two days to choose before moving into a new place. Normally I'd compare firmware reviews for a week, but there was no time. The router worked fine in the living room and did almost nothing for the back bedroom. $230 later, I learned a simple lesson: coverage claims are marketing, placement is engineering.
Since then I've installed 14 systems for small offices, friends, and family. I keep notes about dead zones, device limits, firmware updates, and which routers needed a reboot after three days. This is not a lab test. It's more useful than most lab tests for real-world decisions.
TP-Link Archer BE805 review: fast, but not for everyone
The Archer BE805 is a very good Wi-Fi 7 router. It's fast, the app is clearer than previous TP-Link apps, and the range in open rooms is impressive. Well, impressive for a single box. But unless your devices actually speak Wi-Fi 7, you are buying capacity you can't use yet. Most everyday phones and laptops are still Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. A 2021 laptop with a Wi-Fi 6 card will connect to the BE805, but it won't run any faster than it did on the old router.
People think a faster router makes older devices faster. Actually, the old device is the bottleneck. The router's speed only matters when many devices are pulling from the internet at the same time. If one phone is loading a webpage, the router's top speed doesn't change anything. What a new router gives you is capacity and stability, not a magic speed boost for old gadgets.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), I won't call this the 'best Wi-Fi 7 router' because I haven't tested every flagship. What I can say: in an 1,800-square-foot layout with 40+ devices, the BE805 held stable for 72 days before I moved it to another building. It didn't need a single reboot in that time. That's a result, not a promise. Every environment is different, and I don't have hard data on how it handles steel-frame walls or heavy interference. My sense from other installs is that any single router will struggle at around 2,000 square feet in a dense building.
The old 'reboot your router every night' habit comes from an era when consumer routers had small memory and flaky firmware. Today's good routers are way better. Neither the BE805 nor the S7 needs a nightly reboot in my setup. If you need to reboot daily, the problem is usually something else—maybe an ISP issue, a switch loop, or one device hammering the network.
TP-Link Deco S7 review: the honest workhorse
The Deco S7 is not the kind of product that makes the spec sheet exciting. It doesn't have Wi-Fi 7. It doesn't claim to cover a county. What it does is solve the problem most people actually have: Wi-Fi that dies in the wrong room.
A two-pack covers a lot more square feet than one router, and the app lets you move nodes while it checks signal strength. That feature saved me in a garage where I found a small portable washer dryer combo sitting against a concrete wall. Before the mesh node, that laundry corner was a dead zone. Video calls dropped; the washer's 'smart' status kept showing offline. Not because the washer is a bandwidth hog, but because the signal couldn't get through the concrete.
After adding a Deco S7 node on a shelf near the outlet, the Wi-Fi held without dropping. Same router, same internet plan, same washer. The only change was node placement. If you remember one thing from this review, remember this: the expensive router in the living room won't fix a dead zone in the utility room. A mesh node near the dead zone will.
I wish I had measured signal strength before and after every install. I didn't. What I can say anecdotally is that the Deco S7 fixed issues that a single router couldn't fix in five of the last seven homes I set up. It's enough for streaming, video calls, and a house full of smart-home gadgets. The newest Wi-Fi standard isn't what makes those things work; stable coverage is.
Moes Wi-Fi smart switch (no-neutral): what I learned the hard way
One of the most common mistakes I run into is blaming the router for a smart switch that won't pair. I installed a Moes Wi-Fi smart switch (no-neutral) in an old hallway because there was no neutral wire in the box. These switches are useful in older wiring, but they still need a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and a router that doesn't isolate clients from each other.
With the Deco S7, I set up a separate IoT network and the switch paired without a problem. The Archer BE805 also worked. Honestly, a $30 TP-Link router would have been fine for the switch itself. The switch only sends a small packet occasionally. The real challenges were the wiring, the switch's minimum load requirement, and figuring out the no-neutral mode in the app.
If your no-neutral switch drops offline, don't assume you need a new router. Check the Wi-Fi band first. Disable band steering or put the switch on a 2.4 GHz-only IoT network. Then check the minimum load on the switch. That last one is the one nobody checks.
Small appliances, smart switches, and the mistake I keep fixing
When people tell me their small portable washer dryer combo is offline, my first question is where that appliance sits. If it's in a garage, laundry room, or basement, the problem is nearly always placement: Wi-Fi has to pass through concrete, metal pipes, and a stack of towels. A mesh node near the appliance solves it. Moving the router to a hallway closet helps too.
The second question is whether the appliance actually needs Wi-Fi. Some 'smart' washers just report a cycle timer. If that status isn't critical, don't overbuild the whole network just to keep a washer connected. A cheap 2.4 GHz extender or a single Deco node is enough.
The checklist I use before every router purchase
- Check the actual internet plan. If it's below 1 Gbps, Wi-Fi 7 won't make the internet faster.
- Walk through the space with a phone running a signal meter. Box coverage numbers are marketing, not engineering.
- Use wired backhaul for mesh nodes whenever you can. It makes the Deco S7 noticeably more stable.
- Put smart-home devices on a 2.4 GHz network that allows communication between devices. Client isolation breaks setup.
- If there's a utility room or garage with a portable washer/dryer combo, place a mesh node close to it. The living room ceiling isn't going to help.
That list has caught more problems than any router spec sheet. It also keeps me from buying a $400 router when a $150 mesh system plus a few hours of cable management would do the job.
What this guide won't tell you
Now the honest boundary. I know networking and basic wiring. I don't install plumbing or water filtration. If you searched for how to service reverse osmosis system, this page is not that guide. The 30-second version, with the warning that this isn't my trade: shut off the inlet feed, open the tap, remove the filter housing, replace the sediment filter and carbon block in the order shown on your manual, flush at least two full tanks, and check the membrane every 12-18 months. For anything else, call a licensed plumber or follow the manufacturer's manual.
Why would a router reviewer write that? Because I'd rather tell you what I can't do than pretend to be a generalist. The vendor who says 'this isn't our strength—here's who does it better' earns my trust for everything else. That is the same reason I use TP-Link: they make solid networking gear for a reasonable price, and I don't ask them to fix my water pressure.
If you're replacing a router because your small portable washer dryer combo is offline, start with placement, not specs. If you're stuck with no neutral wire, the switch is probably fine; the Wi-Fi settings are where the problem hides. And if you need a reverse osmosis system serviced, I'm the wrong person—but I'll tell you that before taking your money.
