So which one should you buy?
When this checklist applies
If you've ever stood in a router aisle and thought "the AX number is higher, so it's better," this checklist is for you. I've been installing networks for small offices and homes for 11 years—maybe 12, my invoices blur together. In my first year, I tried to save money for a client by buying a single high-spec router. It failed. I drove back, bought a second router, then a third, then a mesh system. That afternoon cost me roughly $1,200 in wasted hardware and an entire weekend. Worst part: the client had a standard depth refrigerator with a Wi-Fi display, and it kept dropping off the network.
Now I keep a checklist. This is it.
Use it when you're choosing between TP-Link AX1800 vs AX3000, or when you're thinking about a mesh system like the TP-Link Deco BE25. It also works if you're setting up a network for a small business that doesn't have an IT department.
The 7-Step Checklist
1. Count devices by band, not by room
Before looking at speed numbers, list everything that will connect. Phones, laptops, printers, that standard depth refrigerator with a screen, postal locker smart lock systems in the lobby, even a reverse osmosis system with a Wi-Fi monitor. They all take an IP address, and most of the low-power smart ones only use 2.4GHz.
This matters more than AX1800 vs AX3000. You can have a one-gigabit plan, but if twenty tiny devices are all crowded on 2.4GHz, they'll compete with each other. A faster router doesn't add bandwidth to that band. It just adds a speed limit that nothing can reach.
2. Understand what AX1800 and AX3000 actually mean
Both AX1800 and AX3000 are Wi-Fi 6. The number is the aggregate theoretical throughput: AX1800 is roughly 1.8Gbps total, AX3000 is around 3Gbps total. Real-world numbers are lower.
If your internet plan is 200 or 300 Mbps, AX1800 won't be the bottleneck. If you move large files between a NAS and laptops, AX3000 gives you more room. That's the whole difference for most small offices.
Every spreadsheet analysis for one client said AX1800. My gut said the client's "about 20 devices" meant more. I went with AX3000. Turned out there were 37 connected devices. My gut didn't know the number—it just knew the spreadsheet was too clean.
3. Ask: one router, or mesh?
One router is fine for a small, open space. A mesh system is for when the same router has to cover a hallway, a thick wall, or metal cabinets. If the space is bigger than 1,500 square feet or has a weird shape, mesh is usually the safer call.
Review: TP-Link Deco BE25
If you want a mesh, the TP-Link Deco BE25 is the unit I'm currently recommending. I bought it with my own money. Per FTC guidelines, that's the disclosure I want from any review. Setup took about 12 minutes—maybe 15, I didn't time it. The app was clear enough that I didn't need a manual. The connection stayed stable through six video calls, a printer, and a smart lock. Not bad.
The Deco BE25 is a Wi-Fi 7 system, so it's a little ahead of Wi-Fi 6 routers like the AX3000. Is that necessary for a 200 Mbps internet plan? No. But if mesh is on your list, it's not a bad way to make that list shorter.
4. Check the internet plan before paying for speed
No router can make your internet faster than your ISP. If the symptom happens on a wired connection too, Wi-Fi is not the problem. I've spent a full afternoon "fixing" a Wi-Fi network that was actually a bad modem connection. The most frustrating part: all the diagnostics looked fine until I tested at the modem with a cable. Then it was obvious.
Bottom line: run a wired speed test before comparing AX1800 vs AX3000. If the wired speed is low, the router isn't the fix.
5. Plan placement before you take it out of the box
Draw a rough floor plan. Put the router in the room where people actually work. If that room has a metal postal locker smart lock system, remember that metal is a terrible neighbor for Wi-Fi. You'll probably need a mesh satellite near that area, or at least not on the other side of the metal wall.
Don't hide the router in a cabinet. Don't put it directly on top of a power strip and behind a monitor. It sounds obvious, but that's how I ended up with a $2,400 rework on a 3,000-square-foot office. Placement missing, not budget.
6. Plan the power and cable details
Mesh satellites need power. Ethernet cables need to reach. A ceiling mount needs a ladder and zip ties. I once ordered a mesh system and discovered none of the satellites could be placed where they helped because the only outlets were hidden behind a heavy filing cabinet.
If you can run Ethernet between the main router and a satellite, do it. The Deco BE25 also handles wireless backhaul well, but a cable is still a cable—less interference, less guesswork.
7. Test one unit before committing to the full setup
Buy one AX1800, or one AX3000, and set it up in the worst spot. Walk around with your phone. If signal drops in another room, return it and get the other model or a mesh kit. This is the step everybody skips because it feels wasteful. It's actually the cheapest way to learn the truth.
Better than buying three range extenders and still having a dead corner. Not ideal. Workable, but not ideal.
Common errors I'd rather you avoid
First, don't ignore firmware updates. I skipped this on the first router I ever installed, and it rebooted during the client's morning meeting. The client laughed. I didn't.
Second, don't put older smart devices on a WPA3-only network just because you can. Some smart plugs and lock systems still need 2.4GHz and WPA2. If they can't connect, they'll keep retrying, and the network looks broken even though it's actually fine.
Third, remember that not every question is a network question. One client asked, "Does a reverse osmosis system remove minerals?" Yes. That's what reverse osmosis does. The thing is, their RO system had a Wi-Fi monitor, and the monitor was on a guest network that blocked the app. Same conversation, two entirely different problems.
Fourth, respect the mailbox rules. If you're installing a postal locker smart lock system that's part of a residential mailbox, the USPS has rules about who can put mail in the box. Under federal law (18 U.S. Code § 1708), only USPS-authorized mail may be placed in residential mailboxes. That's not a Wi-Fi issue. It's a "check the regulations before you install" issue.
So which one should you buy?
If your place is small and your internet plan is under 500 Mbps, the TP-Link AX1800 is genuinely enough. If you have more devices, a gigabit plan, or a stubborn wall, get the AX3000. If the space is still dead after that, now you're in mesh territory—and the TP-Link Deco BE25 is the one I'd start with.
Small offices don't need flagship gear. They need an honest floor plan and a checklist. Take it from someone who has spent too much money learning this. The right time to choose AX1800 vs AX3000 is before you unpack anything, not after you've already got a wall full of cables.
